A MAN has pleaded guilty to stealing a bottle of wine from the café inside Crawley train station on Valentine's Day. Peter Bawn, of White Acre in Littlehampton, appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on February 15. The 60-year-old committed the crime at Pumpkin Café. Magistrates ordered Bawn to pay £4.14 in compensation for the offence.

A SAFE is believed to have been stolen from a shop in Pound Hill during a burglary in the early hours of Saturday morning. Just after 2am police were called to Shire Parade following the break-in. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "A break-in was reported on Shire Parade. A van left the scene, and it appears they may have taken a safe. This is an ongoing investigation." WE have a big problem in society with the way we view rape cases and it's as evident in Crawley as it is anywhere. Your immediate reaction to this statement may be to dismiss it as nonsense - rape is a horrendous crime and any right-minded individual would see it as that and surely condemn it. But why then do so many people, perhaps only subconsciously, doubt an allegation of rape in a way that they would not do so with any other crime? In my experience as a reporter for Crawley News...
